It’s been twenty years since one of the worst hurricanes in U.S. history roared through the Southeast. Next week, it will be a Hurricane Andrew survivor who was inside her family’s home as it began to crumble to the ground around her who will be doing something special to help protect her neighbors in the Peach State.

Long-time realtor Adrian Campbell has made a career move close to her heart as the 2023 Hurricane Season approaches. The 43-year-old Woodstock resident will launch the new Brightway, The Campbell Agency insurance office in Alpharetta this Monday.

“We moved to Georgia just before COVID hit. It was during those difficult times that I realized I was meant for something more with a personal connection,” Campbell said.

Only 12 years old when Hurricane Andrew made landfall in August of 1992, the horror of watching her home rip apart around her is something that is still fresh in her mind. “As our house began to collapse with us inside of it, we ran out and took cover in our car during the eye of the storm.” However, that’s when the tornadoes began to form around their Homestead, Florida neighborhood. The South Florida family would ride out Andrew’s 175 miles-per-hour wind in the family car, hoping for the best.

In the end, there was more than $27 billion in damage and 65 fatalities. Among the dead was a friend of Campbell’s. “I actually turned 13 a few days later. That was the day I learned she had passed away,” Campbell said. In Georgia, 17 people lost their lives as a result of the historic weather event.

The only child of two U.S. Air Force vets who helped play a part in growing something special in South Florida, Campbell learned what it takes to not only survive, but to succeed, as well, with her own eyes.

“My dad owned a computer repair company in the 1980s and helped set up the communication network in Miami-Dade County,” Campbell said. Otto Morales, originally from Cuba, and her mother, Kathy, originally from Mexico, met during their years in the service. “Dad eventually owned apartment buildings and my mom was the financial brains behind it all. I guess I’m a perfect mix of both of them.”

Married with two children of her own, Campbell and her husband, Ron, currently live in Woodstock.
