PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLA. — Brian and Rhoda Murphy, husband and wife and Co-owners of Brightway, The Murphy Agency, embarked on a personal mission to deliver more than 500 pairs of shoes to help Hurricane Dorian victims in The Bahamas. For this donation, Brightway, The Murphy Agency once again partnered with The Benjamin School of Palm Beach Gardens.
The Murphys are no strangers to the philanthropic spirit of their community. The Agency has operated as a collection site for Soles4Souls, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and contributing to disaster relief and assistance programs, since September 2018. In February of this year, the Agency collected 250 pairs of shoes and coordinated with The Benjamin School of Palm Beach Gardens to deliver more than 600 pairs for the nonprofit.
The Murphys were spurred into action after a good friend from The Bahamas came to Palm Beach Gardens following the hurricane and asked if they would be interested in donating items. After learning that shoes were one of the most needed donations, and with his Agency’s history of assisting with getting shoes where they are sorely needed, Brian Murphy said he would see what he could do.
“We said a prayer for the Hurricane Dorian survivors and left,” he said. “I got in my car and, with the weight of the hurricane’s devastation fresh in my head and my commitment, I asked God to please help me get some shoes for the survivors.”
That evening, The Benjamin School’s middle school arts chair, Nancy McAllister, reached out to Murphy and asked if he could pick up 350 to 400 pairs of shoes for delivery. Two days later, Brightway, The Murphy Agency had packed and sent more than 500 pairs of shoes for delivery.
"We’ve been collecting and donating shoes for a while now, and the impact of a simple shoe donation is incredible,” said Brian Murphy. “A shoe donation goes further than most people would assume. These donations are a practice in sustainability and repurposing items that might ordinarily be wasted on a closet shelf. It made perfect sense to leverage a partnership with The Benjamin School to help our neighbors in The Bahamas by combining our efforts. We’re so grateful that they reached out to us and that we were able to help.”
In addition to personally assisting with delivering shoes to Hurricane Dorian survivors in The Bahamas, Brightway, The Murphy Agency will continue to act as a collection site for shoes to be donated to Soles4Souls. Those wishing to donate to Soles4Souls may drop off new or gently worn shoes at the Agency located at 4550 Donald Ross Road in Suite I-110 in Palm Beach Gardens (in the Donald Ross Village plaza).
Brightway, The Murphy Agency has been helping families in South Florida protect their homes, cars and much more since 2010.
