Making ends meet in Imperial County can be a challenge in 2023. With nearly one in four living below the poverty line, twice the national average, building a career in Calexico is filled is often filled with roadblocks.

For one valley native, he is “insuring” his career path by putting part of his focus on the roads connecting Mexico and the United States. Just three blocks from the Calexico West Land Port of Entry, 42-year-old Cesar Delgadillo will open Brightway, The C&J Family Agency next week.

Thousands cross the border from Mexicali into Calexico every week for the opportunity to work jobs in their county’s strong agricultural industry. That’s where Delgadillo realized there was a way to not only be successful helping out his neighbors from the U.S., but he can also help those making the trip to the States for their own opportunities.

“Many of those who live near the border in Mexico, come to the U.S. to work week-to-week,” Delgadillo said. “And, actually, there are many who keep two residences, one in the U.S. and one in Mexico. They’ll stay in the States to work during the week, then return to their home in Mexico on the weekend.” A resident of Imperial County since his family’s move to the U.S., Delgadillo has worked in the region’s mortgage industry since 2015.

A son of two who worked in agriculture in the Southern Cali town, Delgadillo knows the long-standing history of the blended workforce from Imperial County and Baja California. “My family moved to Heber from Mexico for work when I was just 10 years old,” Delgadillo recalls.

“Born in Guadalajara and raised in Imperial County, I can tell you those are two completely different lifestyles. But they all are hopeful for the right opportunity and take pride in a job well done.”

A graduate of Southwest High School (El Centro), Delgadillo, his wife, Joanna and their four children still live in Heber today. A member of his high school’s two-time regional soccer champion roster, Delgadillo continues his love of the game and the community by coaching his daughter’s youth soccer teams when his schedule allows.
