A former college football player in the Grand Canyon State is pursuing an American Dream for the second time in his life next week. Former Western New Mexico University (WNMU) student-athlete David Weaver will open the doors of his brand new Brightway, The Weaver Agency insurance office in Scottsdale Monday.

As we head into this holiday weekend, Weaver, a 55-year-old U.S. Army vet, knows all too well that dreams really do come true. And you don’t have to look any farther than Silver City for the proof.

For Weaver, it was a real estate career turned to insurance which led to this brand-new venture on North Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. However, it’s not the first rodeo for this former Mustang in achieving what many believed to be impossible.

The year was 2002 and his blue-collar position in South Carolina was in jeopardy due to a union strike. With no end in sight, that’s when a 34-year-old Weaver made the decision to pursue his vision of becoming a collegiate football player. As he researched the options that would give him the best chance of reaching his goal, he pulled up stakes and headed west to Grant County and the campus of WNMU.

The middle-aged linebacker successfully made the Mustang roster for two consecutive years in 2002 and 2003 before making the decision to hang up the cleats. “I was definitely the oldest guy on the roster,” Weaver recalled. “But, I did everything it took to make sure they knew I was there, that I belonged and that I could make a difference.” Born in Delaware, this son of a U.S. Air Force Captain would graduate from Stratford High School (S.C.) in 1986. He would later play eight years of semi-pro football, as well.

The insurance industry pro holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from WNMU. Weaver and his wife, Lorraine, currently reside in Scottsdale.

Brightway, The Weaver Agency offers customized Home, Flood, Auto, Boat, Condo, Renters, Personal Articles, RV, Motorcycle, Umbrella, Commercial and Life insurance policies from numerous insurance companies. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday by appointment.
