As long as you have Comprehensive insurance, flood damage to your vehicle may be covered. Comprehensive insurance is a coverage that can pay for damages resulting from flood, if your vehicle is stolen, or if it is damaged in a collision with an animal.

Comprehensive coverage is most often sold in combination with Collision coverage; these two coverages make up the Physical Damage portion of your Auto policy. These are optional coverages unless your vehicle is financed or leased, in which case they’re mandatory. Check your policy to see if you have these coverages.

Some tips if your car is damaged as a result of a flood:

  • File a claim with your insurance carrier immediately; the faster you file, the faster your claim may be handled. You can find Claims Reporting information for your carrier here.
  • Get the vehicle dried out as soon as possible.
  • You always have a choice in the body shop you use to get your vehicle repaired. However, using your insurance carrier’s preferred body shop may ensure that the repairs are guaranteed.
