Buying a home can be very stressful, and many homeowners see insurance as one more thing standing between them and their new home.

While insurance is one of the many requirements when the home is financed, it’s important for homebuyers to understand the importance of insurance coverage, so we simplified what new homeowners need to know in this short list.

  1. Cost is important, but it shouldn’t limit you from getting coverage you need. Focus first on getting the coverage you need, then let your insurance agent shop for you to get you the best price. Understand what’s covered and what’s not and don’t be afraid to ask your agent to explain everything to you.
  2. Is the home in an area prone to sinkholes, a flood plain or other type of high-risk area? If so, you can expect to pay more for insurance than the average rate for a home of comparable size in the same market. Additionally, you may find it more difficult to find an insurance company that will insure the property. Speak with an insurance agent if you have concerns about a property. He or she can tell you what to expect in cost and choice of brands and tell you what coverage you will want to make sure you have to protect yourself.
  3. Know what you can do to keep your price down. Smoke detectors and security systems are preventive measures you can add to lower your insurance bill, while swimming pools and hot tubs will drive up your risk and thus your cost of insurance.

Of course, if you don’t know what you don’t know, seek counsel from an insurance agent. The expert advice you receive may be invaluable in the event of a disaster.
